St. Augustine in 1 day: fort, pirates, the old town and the lighthouse

2026-10-12

St. Augustine, Florida, is the oldest continuously inhabited European-founded city in the United States, and you can explore it on foot in a day. This is the day I did, in the order that works: history in the morning, oddities in the afternoon and the lighthouse to finish. The full itinerary, with timings and a map, is below: you can clone it and adjust it to your pace.

Morning: the Castillo de San Marcos

Start early at the Castillo de San Marcos, the fort the Spanish built between 1672 and 1695 from coquina, a stone made of seashells. Walk through the soldiers' quarters, the storeroom with its barrels, and go up to the gun deck overlooking the bay. Give it about three unhurried hours.

Midday: lunch and pirates

Have lunch in the old town, a few steps away. Then the pirate museum (St. Augustine Pirate & Treasure Museum), across from the fort: more than you'd expect from a themed museum.

Afternoon: the old town and Ripley's

Walk through the City Gates and along St. George Street, the pedestrian street of the historic district. Nearby is the St. Augustine Ripley's Believe It or Not!: it was the world's first permanent Ripley's museum, opened in 1950, an odd and fun stop.

Finale: the lighthouse's 219 steps

To finish, the St. Augustine Lighthouse, on Anastasia Island, a few minutes' drive across the Bridge of Lions. It's 219 spiral steps, and at the top you get the city, the bay and the ocean in one view. Get there before 5 p.m. so you don't miss the climb.
