Barcelona on a cruise port day: the Sagrada Familia inside and back to the ship on time
On many cruise stops the same thing happens: you get off the ship without a plan, walk around the port and go back without seeing the city. It happened to me more than once. In Barcelona I went with the day planned and the tickets bought, and there was time for the essentials: the Sagrada Familia outside, inside and from one of its towers, with plenty of time to get back. This is that day; the full itinerary, with timings and a map, is below to clone.
Before you leave the ship
- Buy your Sagrada Familia tickets in advance on the official website: from the ship or, better, the day before, while planning your itinerary. They have a set entry time and tower tickets sell out.
- Work out your cut-off time: the ship's departure minus at least one hour ("all aboard" is usually earlier). With a 5 or 6 p.m. departure, plan to be back at the terminal around 4 p.m.
From the port to the city (9:30)
Cruise ships dock at the Moll Adossat terminals, a long walk from the center. The practical option is the port shuttle bus (Cruise Bus), which drops you in about 10 minutes near the Columbus monument, at the end of La Rambla. A taxi is the other option.
Columbus and Port Vell (10:00)
A short walk around Port Vell and the Columbus monument. From there, walk about 15 minutes along Avinguda del Paral·lel to the three chimneys of the old power station: right next to them is Paral·lel metro station, and line 2 takes you straight to Sagrada Família, no changes. By taxi, about 15 minutes.
The Sagrada Familia (10:45–1:15 p.m.)
First, the façades: the richly detailed Nativity and the starker Passion. Then the interior, a different world: columns that branch like trees and stained glass that tints the light red and orange on one side and blue and green on the other. To finish, the tower: you go up by lift and come down on foot along a stone spiral staircase, with the whole city and the sea below.
Lunch and back (1:15–4 p.m.)
Have lunch around the Sagrada Familia and head back calmly: line 2 back to Paral·lel, a last stroll around Port Vell and the shuttle bus back to the terminal. Getting back with time to spare is the one rule you never break on a cruise.
Practical tips
- Tickets: only on the official Sagrada Familia website (there are many pricier resellers). The tower ticket includes going up by lift and down by stairs; children under 6 can't go up the towers.
- Port shuttle bus: pay by card on board; there's a same-day return ticket.
- Margin: the metro and taxis can be slow at midday; if you're short on time, take a taxi straight to the terminal.
- Pickpockets: watch bags and phones on La Rambla, on the metro and at the Sagrada Familia entrance.
