New York in 1 day: the route I did, ordered so you don't waste time

2026-10-04

This is the day I did in New York, put in order so you don't waste time going back and forth. It's packed, but it fits all the essentials: the Statue of Liberty, Lower Manhattan, the best view of the city and Midtown at night. The full itinerary, with timings and a map, is below: you can clone it and adjust it to your pace.

Morning: the Statue of Liberty

Start early at Battery Park, at the southern tip of Manhattan, where the ferry to Liberty Island leaves. Getting there before 9 saves you the longest line. The statue looks huge from the ferry, and on the island you can walk around it and visit the museum. Ellis Island is on the same ferry, but with just one day, leave it for next time.

Midday: Lower Manhattan

Back at Battery Park, head to the 9/11 Memorial & Museum, at the foot of the One World Trade Center (on foot or on the 1 train from South Ferry to WTC Cortlandt). Give it a couple of hours, lunch nearby included.

Afternoon: the Empire State

Take the subway to 34th Street (the R or W from Cortlandt St to 34 St–Herald Sq drops you almost at the door) and go up the Empire State Building. The exhibit about its construction is worth it, and from the observatory you see the whole city: Lower Manhattan, the Hudson River and the Midtown skyscrapers. Then stroll through Bryant Park and along Fifth Avenue to rest your legs.

Night: Midtown lit up

At dusk, Grand Central Terminal: the main concourse and, on the lower level, the whispering gallery. Then Rockefeller Center and its lit-up gardens (in the holiday season, the Saks light show on the facade across the street), and a few steps away St. Patrick's Cathedral and the Atlas statue. If you still have energy, finish in Times Square.
